At sunset, the town sometimes heard a deep bell sounding from the woods. Nobody could find its tower. People paused in the busy streets, listening while the mysterious notes travelled above the rooftops.

Visitors walked to the forest edge, then stopped for cakes and tea. They said the bell must be nearby. Yet whenever they listened carefully, the deep sound seemed to come from farther among the trees.

One bright afternoon, a group of children decided to search. They followed a leafy path past mossy stones. Some grew tired and turned back, while others stayed to gather flowers near the stream.

They reached a small woodland house with a little bell hanging under its roof. Most were satisfied. A young prince listened again and thought this bright tinkling sounded different from the town's deep music.

He continued into the forest and met a village boy in a plain brown coat. The boy had finished a task at home and now wanted to follow the wonderful sound for himself.

The prince believed the bell lay to the left. The village boy thought the right path sounded clearer. They chose different trails, promising to share whatever they found when their routes met again.

The prince passed calm lakes and tall trees that moved in the breeze. The boy followed a darker path where roots curled across the ground. Both stopped often to listen before choosing their next step.

As sunset neared, the prince climbed a broad rocky path overlooking the sea. The village boy reached the same height from the other side. They saw one another and ran forward with delighted greetings.

Before them stretched shining water, golden clouds and a forest full of evening voices. The deep bell seemed to sound through it all. Neither found a metal bell, yet both felt they had reached its music.

They stood together until the first stars appeared, then followed the safe path home. Their different journeys had brought them to the same wonder: the whole living world seemed ready to be heard.
