Name: ____________________   Date: ______________

Read the story. Write, say or draw your answers. Use the page clues when you need them.

  1. Why does the traveller hold her cloak more tightly in the wind? (page 4)

  2. What changes when the sun comes out? (page 7)

  3. Who makes the final choice to remove the cloak? (page 8)

Draw and explain

Draw two panels showing the traveller’s hands and cloak: one in the wind and one in the sunshine. Add a thought bubble to each. Use clues from the story to explain the difference, then act out the two expressions without pulling anyone’s clothes.

The North Wind and the Sun: answers and discussion

These notes refer to this Neutoons retelling. Accept answers in the reader’s own words. Other tellings may have different details or endings.

  1. She holds the cloak against the gusts to keep it around her. (page 4)

  2. Warmth and quiet air make her more comfortable, and she loosens her grip. (page 7)

  3. The traveller chooses to remove it when she feels warm. (page 8)

Story summary

Wind and Sun try to persuade a traveller to remove her cloak. The harder Wind blows, the more tightly she holds it. Gentle sunshine makes her comfortable enough to take it off herself.

Talk about the lesson

Understanding someone’s needs can work better than applying force. The traveller removes her cloak because she feels warm and comfortable, rather than because it is pulled away from her.

Using the sheet together

Leave time to look at pictures and ask questions. Ask what in the story supports an answer, rather than scoring it. Drawings can have many good solutions. This is a shared-reading resource, not a curriculum certification or an assessment.

You may print and copy this worksheet for home and classroom use. Keep the Neutoons name and story link with the sheet.
